Journal and letter, 1852-1853.

Cornell sailed from New York for San Juan on the ship Northern Light, crossed the Isthmus and arrived in San Francisco on the S.S. Lewis. The journal describes the voyage, hardships and delays on the Isthmus, conditions on the ships, his illness, and the kindness of others, especially William Thrall and son. An 1853 letter to his wife tells of his efforts to find work and his life in Sonora.

William Henry Thrall, conservationist and editor, came to California from Connecticut in 1888. Thrall loved to hike and became an authority on the trails and history of the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. From 1933-38 he served as head of the Division of Mountain Education of the Los Angeles County Department of Recreation.
